By default, MOOSE writes Tecplot files in ASCII format. In the past, we have used the ".plt" file extension to denote these ASCII files, but this is inconsistent with the typical Tecplot naming convention which uses the ".plt" extension for binary files instead.

This behavior has now changed: ASCII Tecplot files are written with the more standard ".dat" file extension.

If you would like to write Tecplot files in Tecplot's native binary format, first configure libmesh with the --enable-tecplot flag, and then add the following Tecplot section to the Outputs section of your input file.

[Outputs]
  [./Tecplot]
    type = Tecplot
    binary = true
  [../]
